This was my first R.K. Narayan novel, whose novels set in the fictional town of Mahlgudi are much beloved. The story unfolds in two threads. In the first we follow Raju's career as a holy man after a misunderstanding when a villager finds him sleeping rough in an abandoned temple. The other thread follows Raju's previous career as shopkeeper and tour guide, and leads us up to the present day. Self-serving, irresponsible and a serial impostor, Raju is a flawed but very relatable character. Much of the humour in the novel comes from gap between how Raju is perceived and his actual qualities as a human being.
