Patriot is the exhilarating life story of one of the most fearless and inspiring figures of our time, who became a beacon to millions and the sole political threat to Vladimir Putin.

This is Alexei Navalny’s life in his own words: his Soviet childhood, political awakening, his marriage and beloved family, his total commitment to taking on a corrupt regime and his enduring love of Russia and its people. His 2020 poisoning by the Russian security services was a global news event. In 2024 he died in a brutal Siberian prison. He began writing Patriot whilst recovering from his poisoning; it ends with his prison diaries, seen here for the first time.

We witness the growth of his nationwide support. We see his many arrests and harassment and, in stunning detail, the attempt on his life. We understand why he felt he had to return to Russia. In prison, he shows a spirit and a sense of humour that cannot be crushed.

Patriot is as dramatic as its author’s life – passionate that good and freedom will prevail. It is Alexei Navalny’s final letter to the world, a rousing call to continue his work, an unforgettably positive account of a life that will inspire every reader.

But a definite read for anyone with a deep sense of justice and a need to contribute to honesty and goodness in a world bereft of sound ethics.

Navalny is the Mandela of Russia. Of the 21st century. Putin is the mafia boss of oil and gas. The most loathsome tyrant and ugliest human alive. He has to maintain the lies, the theft and the war to keep Russians servile and his grip on power. The new tsar with his two headed chicken crest above his palace gates. But Navalny knows that this can’t last. He endured and survived Putin’s ultimate persecution in public and in prison. He endured it and thrived on it because he was the leader of a movement that is true and just and he would not buckle. He acted out his deep love for his nation and knew how that would end. This work is simply "unputdownable". A riveting read.

As a lawyer and fervent patriot, Navalny has taken care to demonstrate the credibility of his revelations at all times. I feel both humbled and privileged to have read his story.

Excellent, well-written account of his early life & the reasons why he opposed Putin. Exceptional insight into what it was like to grow up in the Soviet Union & to watch the increasing power & subsequent repression of opposition under Putin. The writing is often humorous & optimistic despite the setbacks, threats to life & experience of Novichok poisoning. Even in the grimmest situations, his humanity & determination not to be silenced, shines through. All the poignant because the reader knows how it ends, Highly recommended as a good read as well.

I have been aware of, and followed Alexei Navalny for a number of years. An extraordinarily brave and courageous principled man, who has seen just how evil Putin is, and tried to challenge him, knowing the possible consequences. In many ways I can only bear to read a few pages at any one time, but I hope I have enough years left to see the end of this ruthless Russian regime. A ‘must read’ book for anyone interested in democracy.
