The long-awaited and highly anticipated conclusion to Philip Pullman’s bestselling The Book of Dust sequence . . .

‘A masterpiece for all eternity… Powerful, profound and utterly unforgettable: a stunning trilogy conclusion.’
- The Telegraph

‘Pullman’s uncanny ability to conjure place is once again in full evidence . . . And when we reach it, the novel’s final showdown is a fantastically nail-biting ride.- The Guardian

‘But for all its intricate interweavings of alchemy and folk tales, ballads and poetry, the book has the pacing of a thriller.’ - The Times

‘Lyra: what will you do when you find this place in the desert, the opening to the world of the roses?’

‘Defend it,’ Lyra said. ‘Die defending it.’

When readers left Lyra in The Secret Commonwealth she was alone, in the ruins of a deserted city. Pantalaimon had run from her – part of himself – in search of her imagination, which he believed she had lost. Lyra travelled across the world from her Oxford home in search of her dæmon. And Malcolm, loyal Malcolm, too journeyed far from home, towards the Silk Roads in search of Lyra . . .

In The Rose Field, their quests converge in the most dangerous, breathtaking and world-changing ways. They must take help from spies and thieves, gryphons and witches, old friends and new, learning all the while the depth and surprising truths of the alethiometer. All around them, the world is aflame – made terrifying by fear, power and greed.

As they move East, towards the red building that will reunite them and give them answers – on Dust, on the special roses, on imagination – so too does the Magisterium, at war against all that Lyra holds dear.

Marking thirty years since the world was first introduced to Pullman’s remarkable heroine Lyra Belacqua in Northern Lights, The Rose Field is the culmination of the cultural phenomenon of The Book of Dust and His Dark Materials.

'Ablaze with light and life . . . To read Pullman is to experience the world refreshed, aglow, in technicolour'
- The Independent

It was some time after the turn of the century that The Amber Spyglass was published and we took delight just in the sheer pleasure of reading the final instalment of the Dark Materials trilogy. Surely, there was more to come? And a sense that - strange though the worlds of Philip Pullman were - there was some meaning there, some parallel with our own lives. It was well over a decade before the slim volume of La Belle Sauvage appeared, and it was an enigma, first part of a new trilogy but no sense - yet- of the direction in which we were heading. Lyra came back to us in all her fascinating mystery, in the Secret Commonwelth and the author lets us into her psyche, and her imagination in ways and twisting storylines that only a reader of Philip Pullman can have grown to expect. Lyra’s place in her real world is intricately linked with “dust” as we might anticipate from the title, with her own “imagination” a word which takes on deeper meaning as the story unfolds, and most of all her relationship with Pan, her daemon. We know from “The Secret Commonwealth” that Pan and Lyra have separated, and the final part of the trilogy keeps us guessing on how these matters are to be resolved - if at all! As the storyline develops we find ourselves asking questions about the meaning of “dust”, links to atomic theory, parallels with changing climates, and the role that international commerce plays in the background in determining our own lives. These and other fundamental questions, along with deep friendships, trust, and love intertwine. Although we are dealing with a world so different from our own reality we cannot help but feel that the answers at the end of this book will be the answers we are seeking in our own lives. Pullman is a master of detail, of believability in an alien world, of engaging the reader in wanting to read for-ever, and there is more than enough in these over-600 pages to keep us satisfied. Do not though, expect ALL the answers, many matters will be resolved, but part of the mystery of life - which goes on - is that we cannot know all there is to know.

You can feel in the story telling that Lyra and Malcom are grown up and therefore the book is a bit more mature and not quite as fantastical because we don't see the world through a child's eyes.

    Dont bother with the discount

15% off - great bargain. Then you discover this puts you below the free postage limit with the end result that with shipping, the book costs more than the original non-discounted price. I despair that no-one thinks it through, Amazon it is I guess lol.
