THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
In his first cookbook, award-winning writer and broadcaster Jay Rayner offers delicious, doable recipes inspired by his favourite restaurant dishes for you to cook at home.
___
‘For the past twenty-five years, I have been reviewing restaurants across Britain and beyond, from the humblest of diners to the grandest of gastro-palaces. And throughout I’ve been taking the best ideas home with me to create glorious dishes for my own table.
Now I get to share those recipes with you.’
With 60 recipes that take their inspiration from restaurants dishes served across the UK and further afield, Nights Out at Home includes a cheat’s version of :
- The Ivy’s famed crispy duck salad
- The brown butter and sage flatbreads from Manchester’s Erst
- The cult tandoori lamb chops from London’s Tayyabs - a recipe which has never been written down before!
- Jay’s own personal take on the mighty Greggs Steak Bake
Seasoned with stories from Jay’s life as a restaurant critic, and written with warmth, wit and the blessing, and often help, of the chefs themselves, Nights Out at Home is a celebration of good food, great eating experiences, and home cooking – with a twist!

A beautifully-produced book, Jay really hits the brief with this combination of descriptions of memorable restaurant visits (often recapturing the past as the places are sometimes sadly defunct) and home cook-appropriate recipes that you can tell have been given maximum attention by the author. The book is a joy to read even without trying any of the recipes, but I promise you'll be cracking out the weighing scales and utensils to give some a try (even if his passion for anchovies does shine through a little too often!!). Thank you Jay and Guardian Books.

As a long time fan of Jay's reviews and his earlier books I couldn't wait to read this one, and when it arrived I just devoured it. Such a fabulous read and so refreshing compared to most cook books. No over bloated explanations or complex recipes that require the most obscure ingredients, it's like a family friend! So good I bought a second copy for my Daughter to enjoy at Christmas. Recommended.
