A beautiful journey through the British countryside, drawn from The Guardian's beloved Country Diary.
With an introduction by Ian McMillan, and illustrations by Clifford Harper.

'Full of sparkle, wonder and surprise, here is the natural world in book form.' PATRICK BARKHAM

For over a century, The Guardian's Country Diary has published the nation's most celebrated writers of natural history as they capture the essence of the British countryside.

From Yorkshire to Belfast, Orkney to Cumbria, and Gwynedd to the Scottish Highlands, exquisitely written and softly observed snapshots emerge - of fishes lurking in dusky pools, of age-old trees beneath deep blue skies, of lives being lived alongside the ebbs and flows of the natural world.

Bringing together the finest contributions to the column from recent years, Under the Changing Skies is an essential companion for all those with a deep love for the British countryside, charting its subtle changes over the course of the seasons.

With contributions from Cal Flyn, Mark Cocker, Josie George, Nicola Chester, Lev Parikian, Amy-Jane Beer, Kate Bradbury, Andrea Meanwell and many others.

    UNDER THE CHANGING SKIES

August 1958: a naive northern lad, a pupil in the office of a Chartered Surveyor, I felt the need to learn the ways of the world and eventually settled on the Manchester Guardian as my mentor: there I discovered Country Diary and have missed very few since, catching up on those I did miss, easily done today on-line, previously by buying the Country Diary annual or searching out the missed issues of the Guardian. Under the Changing Skies is a decent complement to the daily diary, nicely produced but without the photographs of the original articles which reduces the articles to mere print when the country side is all colour and sound. Cost is, I imagine the problem. I am amazed by how many of the diaries I recall. Harry Griffin was the first diarist I encounterd, writing mainly about climbing the Lake District mountains; today the number of contributors and the fields of interest are much wider and country wide which is reflected in the book's content. Contributors have come and gone over the years and not all write from the British countryside: Lev Parikian writes from South London, some from other lands like France and Ukraine and of course there are favourites but for me the diaries of Andrea Meanwell touch home: she farms at Tebay just a few miles up the road from here. I will search out my Country Diary annuals from previous years. I know I gave my son in Switzerland one which he keeps by his bedside to remind him of home.
