'So. Good. So. Sharp. So. Clear. You. Need. This. Book. Period' Lucy Mangan, author of Bookish'A roller coaster of a story' New York TimesSince the dawn of writing, punctuation has helped us tell our stories. Scribes in ancient Alexandria simplified their scrolls with full stops and commas, opening the doors of their library to the entire world. During the Renaissance, semicolons and exclamation marks empowered writers to satirise society and inject life and passion into their texts. Even today, the youngest generations creating new rules for emojis, caps and irony in the lexicon of online language. In this riotous global history, Florence Hazrat reveals the creators and rebels who made punctuation what it is today, conjuring new meanings from commas and colons, parentheses and pilcrows. Witty and original, On the Mark journeys across the world and through the evolution of language, celebrating the silent marks that infuse our words with meaning and shape our literary cultures.

The initial prompt arrived whilst reading my morning paper - the Guardian. An article about the book caught the eye followed by the interest. I would quite like to read about punctuation and still don’t know where to put the apostrophe. Out bank card and fill in the purchase order on the spur of the moment - not a usual action for me. But hayho looks interesting. Ordered two copies because the book appeared to be interesting enough to give a friend as a Birthday read. First disappointment didn’t take long to arrive. Have to wait for another print run so missed the birth date presentation. When the books eventually arrived I was pleased and satisfied with the quality and feel - always important for me - so at the first opportunity of peace and quiet I sat to read. Interesting, informative, intriguing, captivating and certainly holding. But alas the grey cells of an eighty seven year old just could not keep up with the bombardment of detail and the plethora of information. I have given up half way house. It was a disappointing purchase and I still don’t know where to place the apostrophe but that is my misfortune not that of the author. A great and distinctive tome and so well presented but just too much for me. It was just too much like reading a reference book instead of reading for pleasure and relaxation. Thanks anyway. Take care and God Bless Chris
